Regular and Preventive Care:
One of the biggest reasons that contribute to rugs decay is dirt accumulation and not major foot traffic as many people think. With time the accumulated dirt and dust set into the fibers and causes them to slowly degenerate over time. and the longer the dirt stays the deeper it gets within and thus becomes harder to remove.
So regular cleaning and dusting are crucial to ensure the rug's longevity. In fact, Moroccan artisans recommend simply shaking the rugs at least once a week so dust particles won't have the time to get cozy inside the rug fibers.
If your rug is too heavy for shaking, another solution will be to just hang the carpet in an open space for a couple of days, which will allow the unwanted build up to simply fall off. Give it a couple of bangs to speed up the process. Thank you gravity!
Vacuuming and Rugs:
Vacuuming can be efficient to remove the stubborn remaining dirt, so do not be afraid to use your machine. However, there are some rules to follow as not all functions and brushes are appropriate to clean Moroccan rugs.
Avoid using vacuum cleaners with rotating beater bars or harsh brushes as the bristles can seriously damage the weave. Instead, stick to the high suction function through the hand attachment of your cleaner to safely and thoroughly remove any excess debris.
Useful tips:
Make the most of the sunny days to keep your Moroccan rugs fresh! Simply exposing your authentic rug to the sun for a couple of hours can help eliminate any odors that were absorbed by the natural fabrics.
